Is a passport required when travelling to Tasmania from Australia?

Although isolated, Tasmania is a state of Australia. Therefore, a passport is not required to fly from Australia to Tasmania, and Tasmania's passport requirements state that a passport is not required to visit Tasmania from the mainland. However, but for practical purposes, it is recommended that you carry your passport with you, as you will need one to enter back into Australia. If you are a foreign national visiting the country, a visa might also be required; those travelling for tourism or business for less than 90 days can opt to obtain a 'Electronic Travel Authority (ETA)' for a small fee.
