Travel writer Phil Thomas answers this for us:
“Low-cost airlines are cheap if you fly on their terms. Add a second bag, seat selection, or priority boarding and the price will balloon.” For travellers who value comfort - whether that’s extra space, the ability to bring more than a carry-on, or just knowing where you’ll sit - those extras can quickly turn a budget fare into something far less affordable.
“If you need bags, seats, or comfort,” Phil says, “full-service carriers often win once the calculator comes out.” In his case, when booking a trip with his mum, “British Airways came out cheaper than Ryanair” after factoring in baggage and seat selection.
The lesson? Budget flights can be great for light, no-frills travel. But if comfort matters, or you simply want the full experience built in, premium airlines may offer better value than you think.
